Quote 101 – The common belief is that religion is always opposed to material good. ‘One cannot act religiously in mercantile and such other matters. There is no place for religion in such pursuits; religion is only for attainment of salvation,’ we hear many worldly-wise people say. In my opinion the author of the Gita has dispelled this delusion. He has drawn no line of demarcation between salvation and worldly pursuits. On the contrary he has shown that religion must rule even our worldly pursuits. I have felt that the Gita teaches us that what cannot be followed in day-today practice cannot be called religion. Thus, according to the Gita, all acts that are incapable of being performed without attachment are taboo. This golden rule saves mankind from many a pitfall. According to this interpretation murder, lying, dissoluteness and the like must be regarded as sinful and therefore taboo. Man’s life then becomes simple, and from that simpleness springs peace.

आम धारणा है कि धर्म हमेशा भौतिक भलाई के विरोध में है। ‘कोई व्यक्ति धार्मिक और ऐसे अन्य मामलों में धार्मिक कार्य नहीं कर सकता है। ऐसे साधनों में धर्म का कोई स्थान नहीं है; धर्म केवल मोक्ष की प्राप्ति के लिए है, ‘हम कई सांसारिक-ज्ञानी लोगों को कहते हैं। मेरे विचार से गीता के लेखक ने इस भ्रम को दूर किया है। उन्होंने मोक्ष और सांसारिक खोज के बीच सीमांकन की कोई रेखा नहीं खींची है। इसके विपरीत उन्होंने दिखाया है कि धर्म को हमारे सांसारिक कार्यों पर भी शासन करना चाहिए। मैंने महसूस किया है कि गीता हमें सिखाती है कि दिन-प्रतिदिन के अभ्यास में जो नहीं हो सकता उसे धर्म नहीं कहा जा सकता। इस प्रकार, गीता के अनुसार, सभी कार्य जो आसक्ति के बिना किए जाने में अक्षम हैं, वर्जित हैं। यह सुनहरा नियम मानव जाति को कई नुकसान से बचाता है। इस व्याख्या के अनुसार, हत्या, झूठ, असहमति और इस तरह के पाप के रूप में माना जाना चाहिए और इसलिए वर्जित है। मनुष्य का जीवन तब सरल हो जाता है, और उस सादगी से शांति मिलती है।

Quote 102 – We do not need to proselytise either by our speech or by our writing. We can only do so really with our lives. Let our lives be open books for all to study.

Quote 103 – Hatred can be overcome only by love.

नफरत को प्यार से ही दूर किया जा सकता है।

Quote 104 – There’s no God higher than truth.

सत्य से बढ़कर कोई भगवान नहीं है।

Quote 105 – Everyone holds a piece of the truth.

हर कोई सच्चाई का एक टुकड़ा रखता है।

Quote 106 – To believe that what has not occurred in history will not occur at all, is to argue disbelief in the dignity of man.

यह विश्वास करने के लिए कि इतिहास में जो नहीं हुआ है वह बिल्कुल नहीं होगा, मनुष्य की गरिमा में अविश्वास का तर्क है।

Quote 107 – When there is no desire for fruit, there is no temptation for untruth or himsa (violence). Take any instance of untruth or violence, and it will be found that at its back was the desire to attain the cherished end. But it may be freely admitted that the Gita was not written to establish ahimsa. It was an accepted and primary duty even before the Gita age. The Gita had to deliver the message of renunciation of fruit. This is clearly brought out as early as the second chapter. 26. But if the Gita believed in ahimsa or it was included in desirelessness, why did the author take a warlike illustration? When the Gita was written, although people believed in ahimsa, wars were not only not taboo, but nobody observed the contradiction between them and ahimsa.

Quote 108 – Você nunca sabe que resultados virão da sua ação. Mas se você não fizer nada, não existirão resultados.

Quote 109 – Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.

हमेशा विचार और वचन और कर्म के पूर्ण सामंजस्य का लक्ष्य रखें। हमेशा अपने विचारों को शुद्ध करने का लक्ष्य रखें और सबकुछ ठीक हो जाएगा।

Quote 111 – Nor is the Gita a collection of do’s and dont’s. What is lawful for one may be unlawful for another. What may be permissible at one time, or in one place, may not be so at another time, and in another place. Desire for fruit is the only universal prohibition. Desirelessness is obligatory.

न ही गीता में डू और न का संग्रह है। एक के लिए वैध क्या दूसरे के लिए गैरकानूनी हो सकता है। एक समय में या एक जगह पर क्या अनुमन्य हो सकता है, एक समय में और दूसरी जगह पर ऐसा नहीं हो सकता है। फल के लिए इच्छा ही एकमात्र सार्वभौमिक निषेध है। इच्छाहीनता अनिवार्य है।

Quote 112 – Stoning prophets and erecting churches to their memory afterwards has been the way of the world through the ages. Today we worship Christ, but the Christ in the flesh we crucified.

नबियों को पत्थर मारना और बाद में उनकी याद में चर्च बनाना युगों से दुनिया का तरीका रहा है। आज हम मसीह की पूजा करते हैं, लेकिन हम जिस मसीह में क्रूस पर चढ़ाते हैं।

Quote 113 – The history of the world is full of men who rose to leadership, by sheer force of self-confidence, bravery and tenacity.

Quote 114 – The earth has everything for all human needs, but nothing for his greed.

Quote 115 – There are no good-byes, where ever you’ll be, you’ll be in my heart.

कोई अच्छा नहीं है, कभी तुम कहाँ हो, तुम मेरे दिल में रहोगे।

Quote 116 – No one can ride on the back of a man unless it is bent.

कोई भी आदमी की पीठ पर तब तक सवारी नहीं कर सकता जब तक कि वह मुड़ा हुआ न हो।

Quote 117 – The question of vernaculars as media of instruction is of national importance; neglect of the vernaculars means national suicide.

निर्देश के मीडिया के रूप में वर्नाक्यूलर का प्रश्न राष्ट्रीय महत्व का है; वर्नाक्यूलर की उपेक्षा का अर्थ है राष्ट्रीय आत्महत्या।

Quote 118 – All have not the same capacity. I would allow a man of intellect to earn more, I would not cramp his talent.

Quote 121 – (When asked what he thought of Western civilization): ‘I think it would be a good idea.

Quote 123 – If I were asked to define the Hindu creed, I should simply say: Search after truth through non-violent means. A man may not believe in God and still call himself a Hindu. Hinduism is a relentless pursuit after truth… Hinduism is the religion of truth. Truth is God. Denial of God we have known. Denial of truth we have not known.

Quote 125 – I am & have been for years a confirmed anti-vaccinationist. Anti-vaccination has no backing from the orthodox medical opinion. A medical man who expresses himself against vaccination loses caste. Tremendous pecuniary interests too have grown around vaccination.

Quote 126 – I feel moved to express what I feel more strongly than anything else, and what in my opinion is of immense importance, namely, what we call the renunciation of all opposition by force, which really simply means the doctrine of the law of love unperverted by sophistries.

Quote 127 – Our duty is very simple and plain. We want to serve the community, and in our own humble way to serve the Empire. That being so, we should fail in our duty if we wrote anything with a view to hurt.

Quote 129 – Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas a good deed should call forth approbation and a wicked deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed, whether good or wicked, always deserves respect or pity as the case may be. “Hate the sin and not the sinner” is a precept which, though easy enough to understand, is rarely practiced, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world.

मनुष्य और उसका कर्म दो अलग-अलग चीजें हैं। जबकि एक अच्छे काम को मंजूरी देना चाहिए और एक दुष्ट काम को अस्वीकार करना चाहिए, चाहे वह कितना भी अच्छा या दुष्ट क्यों न हो, उस काम का कर्ता हमेशा सम्मान या दया का पात्र होता है। “पाप से घृणा करो और पापी से नहीं” एक ऐसा उपदेश है जो यद्यपि समझने में आसान है, शायद ही कभी इसका अभ्यास किया जाता है, और इसीलिए दुनिया में नफरत का जहर फैलता है।

Quote 130 – Friendship that insists upon agreement on all things isn’t worth the name.

Quote 131 – A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.

All this talking can hardly be said to be of any benefit to the world. It is so much waste of time. My shyness has been in reality my shield and buckler. It has allowed me to grow. It has helped me in my discernment of truth.

Quote 133 – We should be able to refuse to live if the price of living be the torture of sentient beings.

Quote 139 – But the fact that I had learnt to be tolerant to other religions did not mean that I had any living faith in God.

Quote 140 – It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us. This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good heart whatever they might have to say.

Quote 141 – In the Gita, the author has cleverly made use of the event to teach great truths.

Quote 146 – It is my firm conviction that man need take no milk at all, beyond the mother’s milk that he takes as a baby. His diet should consist of nothing but sunbaked fruits and nuts.

Quote 147 – Where there is possessiveness, there is violence.

जहां निपुणता है, वहां हिंसा है।

Quote 149 – Action expresses priorities.

Quote 150 – Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you’re right and you know it, speak your mind. Speak your mind even if you’re a minority of one. The truth is still the truth.

Quote 151 – I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

Quote 152 – Ahimsa is a comprehensive principle. We are helpless mortals caught in the conflagration of himsa. The saying that life lives on life has a deep meaning in it. Man cannot for a moment live without consciously or unconsciously committing outward himsa. The very fact of his living – eating, drinking and moving about – necessarily involves some himsa, destruction of life, be it ever so minute. A votary of ahimsa therefore remains true to his faith if the spring of all his actions is compassion, if he shuns to the best of his ability the destruction of the tiniest creature, tries to save it, and thus incessantly strives to be free from the deadly coil of himsa. He will be constantly growing in self-restraint and compassion, but he can never become entirely free from outward himsa. Then again, because underlying ahimsa is the unity of all life, the error of one cannot but affect all, and hence man cannot be wholly free from himsa. So long as he continues to be a social being, he cannot but participate in the himsa that the very existence of society involves. When two nations are fighting, the duty of a votary of ahimsa is to stop the war. He who is not equal to that duty, he who has no power of resisting war, he who is not qualified to resist war, may take part in war, and yet wholeheartedly try to free himself, his nation and the world from war.

Quote 153 – Don’t talk about it. The rose doesn’t have to propagate its perfume. It just gives it forth, and people are drawn to it. Live it, and people will come to see the source of your power.

इसके बारे में बात मत करो। गुलाब को अपने इत्र का प्रचार नहीं करना पड़ता है। यह बस इसे आगे देता है, और लोग इसके लिए तैयार होते हैं। इसे जीते हैं, और लोग आपकी शक्ति के स्रोत को देखने आएंगे।

Quote 154 – The manner in which the Gita has solved the problem is to my knowledge unique. The Gita says, ‘Do your allotted work but renounce its fruit — be detached and work — have no desire for reward and work.

Quote 155 – To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.

Quote 156 – To attain to perfect purity one has to become absolutely passion-free in thought, speech and action; to rise above the opposing currents of love and hatred, attachment and repulsion.

पूर्ण शुद्धता पाने के लिए व्यक्ति को विचार, भाषण और क्रिया में पूरी तरह से जुनून मुक्त होना पड़ता है; प्यार और घृणा, लगाव और प्रतिकर्षण की विरोधी धाराओं से ऊपर उठने के लिए।

Quote 157 – it’s easy to stand in the crowd but it takes courage to stand alone

Quote 158 – Um homem não pode fazer o certo numa área da vida, enquanto está ocupado em fazer o errado em outra. A vida é um todo indivisível.

They deprive them of the spiritual and social heritage of the nation, and render them to that extent unfit for the service of the country. Having these convictions, I made a point of always talking to my children in Gujarati. Polak never liked this. He thought I was spoiling their future. He contended, with all the vigour and love at his command, that, if children were to learn a universal language like English from their infancy, they would easily gain considerable advantage over others in the race of life. He failed to convince me. I do not now remember whether I convinced him of the correctness of my attitude, or whether he gave me up as too obstinate. This happened about twenty years ago, and my convictions have only deepened with experience. Though my sons have suffered for want of full literary education, the knowledge of the mother-tongue that they naturally acquired has been all to their and the country’s good, inasmuch as they do not appear the foreigners they would otherwise have appeared. They naturally became bilingual, speaking and writing English with fair ease, because of daily contact with a large circle of English friends, and because of their stay in a country where English was the chief language spoken.
